What’s up?
Hi, I’m Melanie!
After moving to a 1/8 acre home in Rhode Island with my husband Mike, we realized that maybe living in the suburbs wasn’t for us. While it’s nice being close to a major city for impromptu bar meetups with friends, a sudden pandemic made us rethink our location. Thus the dream of buying some land, building a house, and living with the land was born.
This blog will be used as a diary to track my progress as I level up in the various skills that fall under homesteading, self-sufficiency, permaculture, and gardening. Maybe you’re feeling the same way after the absolute nightmare that the past couple of years have turned out to be and want to get away from your neighbors. Or maybe you just want to learn how to grow pumpkins and make your own puree. Either is cool and I can show you how to do both.
Sweet Potato Homestead
Why sweet potatoes?
Why not? They’re yummy, ~festive~, and they remind me of a sweet baby dog. Mike and I rescued Potato in 2018 and she has been the sweetest dog. Upon seeing her ad on Petfinder, the first name we thought of was Potato due to her goofy tube body and fell in love. She became the spokesdog for our living-in-the-middle-of-nowhere idea as well as the name for our future home. Her and our other rescue dog Chip are crazy on our 1/8 acre, so we can’t wait to see how much they like our 19 acres.
